Next week's Biddy Ball practice will be Tuesday, March 4th (not Wednesday) from 5:30-7. 1st and 2nd grade will be in the elementary and 3 and 4th will be in the high school.
They moved my conference meeting, so I have to move practice.
Thanks, Tom

Weather Related Closings Information
With winter weather settling in this week, combined with Central Illinois’ erratic weather patterns, I thought this would be a good time to inform parents of how, when, and why we make winter school cancellations/delays.
Closing or canceling school is a difficult decision. We have 5 snow/cold days built into this year’s calendar as well as 5 days we can use as Elearning days. Elearning days consist of work that is either sent home or provided via goggle classroom that will take the place of the school day. Teachers can be reached with any questions you or your student might have via email from 8:30am - 1:30 pm. the day of an Elearning day.
Several factors play into the decision-making process when trying to decide what is best for everyone: Transportation issues, student safety and supervision, driver safety, loss of instructional time, and the effect on families and childcare.
VIT provides an opportunity for bus transport to 100% of our students. This is due to our hazardous railroad and highway location. We have two very long country routes and two other routes that combine country roads with town and highway driving. We maintain our buses to be prepared for winter weather. We also start the buses early in the morning to make sure they are fit for the morning routes. Additionally, we start a spare bus (-10 F or lower) in order to ensure that we can quickly reach a stranded/stalled bus already on a route.
We use negative 20 degree fahrenheit windchills (-20 F) as our cancellation/delayed start temperature. This number is fairly standard throughout Fulton County and most of Illinois. Rural districts are affected by windchills more than some urban areas due to long bus routes, more riders, and open-air bus stops.
The process begins days in advance with forecast monitoring (which are not always accurate). The real decision making process begins around 5:00 AM with the following actions:
- Check temperature reading in all three communities. Which can fluctuate by several degrees when windchills are present.
- Go outside for a walk to determine just how “cold” it feels.
- If snow or ice is present, then I take a 5:15 am drive on 136, county highways and random country roads. It is impossible to drive the entire district each morning. I try to vary my morning route as much as possible. I also reach out to several local road commissioners to get their perspective.
- Make a decision, send out early Remind Text Notices as I prepare message for the local news stations . The goal is to have the message by 6:15 am at the latest. If we do a late start you will know by 6pm the previous day.
- During the entire process, I am in contact with area superintendents regarding their plans.
If you have any questions regarding the process by which we determine to cancel or delay school, please do not hesitate to call me. Additionally, you can sign up for Remind texts from the school by texting @vitelem to 81010
Thank you & stay safe.
Mr. Matthew Klaska
